Although this doesn’t fit with any part of their image or sound, the situation I see when I listen to Grizzly Bear— from Yellow House through to the beautiful songs from Shields that we’ve heard so far— is one of wartime domesticity. Their music is brushed with those gorgeous muted greens and greys that you associate with photographs of soldiers dancing with foreign dames in unknown dance halls or community centres, with a fate-tinted tinge that knows exactly what kind of heartache and brokenness would eventually underpin these situations. I love this new song so much already.
